Thousands of Muslims gathered at the Moscow Cathedral Mosque to celebrate Eid al-Adha on Monday.

Eid al-Adha or the Festival of the Sacrifice,
is the second of two globally celebrated holidays in Islam, the other Eid Al-Fitr, with the former honoring Ibrahim or Abraham's will to sacrifice his son to God. Animals are often sacrificed on the holiday.

Muslims make up roughly 14 percent of Russian population with a reported 1.5 million operating out of Moscow.
