Illuminated Shamsa
India
C.1640 – 50
Opaque watercolour, ink and gold on paper
MS.53.2007
Western students of Islamic art tend to concentrate on the illustrative paintings; however other equally sophisticated skills are needed to produce a fine book, the mudhahhib, or gilder, was responsible for all the decorative illumination and this page shows what extraordinary skill was required. Islamic manuscripts and albums from Persia and India often opened with a page of radiating illuminated decoration knows as a shams (from the Arabic shams – meaning, sun) designed to create a great visual impact from the very beginning. The exceptional quality of the illumination and the size of the page point to a royal commission, and it has been suggested that this page was made for one of the royal albums of Shah Jahan in the 1640s and 1650s
